What is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical, also called a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), is a medical checkup that confirms if you are ready to safely take part in sports.

These exams review your health, past injuries and fitness level. The goal is to clear you for safe participation and lower your risk of injury.

A sports physical does not replace a full annual wellness exam and other screenings.

What are the Benefits of
Sports Physicals?

For student athletes in Manhattan, these exams can prevent setbacks before the school season begins. For adults,
they provide reassurance and advice to keep training safely.

Having a PPE helps protect you, your teammates and staff from avoidable illness, injury and even serious health risks. Along with meeting eligibility requirements, a sports physical offers several important benefits.

Evaluating your general health allows us to address concerns early. Reviewing your medical history and completing a routine exam can highlight issues that may prevent participation. Immunization updates can also be reviewed.

Sports physicals are a chance to get helpful training tips. Dr. Syra Hanif may share advice on injury prevention and safe conditioning before a new season or program.

Your medical history is carefully reviewed, including conditions that may run in your family, such as asthma or diabetes. Even if you have not had symptoms recently, some conditions may still affect eligibility. For example, carrying an inhaler can help manage asthma during activity.

Pre-existing conditions and past injuries are also evaluated. This includes everything from minor sprains to more serious concerns like concussion or heat illness. Identifying these risks helps prevent re-injury and keeps you safe while you play.
