Allergy testing is an exam performed by an allergy specialist or immunologist to determine if your body is having an allergic reaction to a substance and which said substance may be causing that reaction. Allergy diagnosis is done using multiple different methods. It can be in the form of a food allergy blood test, skin allergy test, allergy scratch test, or an elimination test. When the physician has determined what you’re allergic to, it would be much easier for you to protect yourself from the allergens that are causing the allergic symptoms and reactions.

Types of Allergies

There are many different types of allergies. Some may be seasonal but most are year-round. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has classified the following types of allergies that are extremely prevalent in the US:

–  Food Allergy:

This is an immune response that occurs when the body is exposed to a particular food or substance in the food, identifying it as dangerous and triggering a response against it. Food allergies are mostly developed in childhood, and children eventually outgrow them. They can also develop in adulthood but that is relatively rare. The common signs and symptoms of food allergy include facial swelling, runny nose, and diarrhea.

–  Drug Allergy:

Drug Allergy is the immune system response against a medication. This response can cause symptoms like hives, rash, fever, and heavy breathing.

–  Latex Allergy:

This is an allergic reaction to natural rubber latex. According to some doctors and scientists, this is mainly caused by prolonged exposure to latex. The prominent symptoms of latex allergy include skin rash, hives, wheezing, and trouble breathing.

– Mold Allergy:

Mold allergy is an allergic reaction caused when you inhale mold spore and your body identifies it as a foreign substance and triggers an immune response against it.

It causes symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and scaling skin.

– Pet Allergy:

Pet Allergy, also referred to as animal allergy, is an immune response against the proteins found in an animal’s skin, saliva, and urine. It’s a relatively common form of allergy. The common symptoms of a pet allergy are sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

– Pollen Allergy:

Pollen is a fine powder released by trees, grass, and flowers in the time of spring. It is one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergies. Many people in the US have an allergic reaction when they inhale pollen. The reaction leads to a few annoying symptoms like sneezing, stuffy nose, and watery eyes.

You might even be asked to stop taking certain medications that may have an impact on your results.
